Introduction

Lumenis Ltd. develops, manufactures and sells medical equipment in laser technology, light flash (IPL) and radio waves. Throughout the production and assembly process, automated tests are used extensively to ensure performance, reliability, and product quality.

The Challenge

The company has a department for developing testing systems (ZVD). Until 2019 there was no automation software in the testing process. The tests were analogous or measured by external digital devices.Lumenis required a uniform automated testing platform, that will:

minimize human errors during testing,
generate results in the same format from all testers and ease result analysis,
reduce the time and costs required for developing a new tester and maintaining existing testers,
reduce training time of production line operators,
and reduce implantation effort in remote sites.

The Solution

TVI is an automated test management framework, which seamlessly integrates with LabVIEW™. The combination of the software's capabilities gave a complete answer to the customer's requirements. We started a pilot project of developing one TVI based tester, while a Testview engineer adapted an existing tester to TVI.
TVI allowed to:

Minimize human errors in the test process through automation.
Generate reports in a regulated format, and ease the result analysis process through the capabilities of the built-in report viewer.
Reduce tester development time by providing a ready-made framework that includes a variety of features.
Reduce tester maintenance time through the innate separation between the framework and the test code that TVI provides, which allows to easily add and edit tests.
Reduce employee training time – the interface was easily adapted to the requirements of the production line. Making it easy-to-learn, and easy-to-use.
Reduce implementation effort in remote sites – the reports are generated in the same format and are saved in the same database, making it easy to compare test results from different testing sites.

Results

Analysis of the process of transition from self-developed software to TVI revealed the following findings:

20% savings in the testers maintenance time - use of existing infrastructure that includes an array of required capabilities without the need to invest expensive engineer hours in developing a test managing software, thus freeing the engineer to focus on test development.
50% saving in testing time in the systems department - the automation and intuitiveness of the testing software saved time for every employee in the systems department. Production line operators found it easier and simpler to run tests through a simple, generic software, and work erosion diminished over time.
50% time savings in training new employees - The intuitiveness of the testing software, created time savings for each new production line employee. The learning curve was reduced by half and it was easier and simpler to train them to use the software and be an active part of a production line.

In light of the success, a decision was made to make TVI the automation infrastructure of several projects in the company. Subsequently,
the Lumenis testers development team continued to convert more and more testers.

As of 2019, Lumenis has acquired over 40 licenses as it upgrades and renews its support services annually.
