Introduction

Nova Lumos Ltd develops, manufactures, and sells home solar systems worldwide. Throughout the production and assembly process, automated testers are used extensively to ensure product performance, reliability and quality.

The Challenge

The company has a team that develops, manufactures, and maintains testing systems (ZVD).
Until 2018, a self-developed software tool (In-House) based on LabVIEW was used. The need to switch to the use of commercial software tools was derived from the accumulation of gaps between the company's requirements and the capabilities of the tool.

They needed a cohesive tool that will:

  • Shorten development time of new testers, and maintenance time of existing testers
  • Easily allow to change test sequence parameters
  • Allow easy and flexible access to the database
  • Provide a uniform, intuitive and easy-to-operate platform for all testers

The Solution

TVI is an automated test management framework, which seamlessly integrates with LabVIEW™. The combination of the software's capabilities gave a complete answer to the customer's requirements.
We started a pilot project of developing one tester based on TVI software.

TVI enabled:

  • Shortening tester development and maintenance time through its separation between the framework and the test code. This allows to easily add and edit tests, and adjust the framework for different testers.
  • To easily change hardware and software parameters for each test and test sequence through the built-in parameter editor.
  • Easy and flexible access to different SQL based databases
  • Shortening the implementation process in remote sites, and shortening the training time of operators, through an adaptable interface to the requirements of the production line

Results

Analysis of the process of transition from self-developed software to TVI revealed the following findings:

  1. 50% savings in testing time on the production line - The automation and intuitiveness of the testing software has created time savings for every production line employee. Production workers found it easier and simpler to run tests through simple, generic software, and work erosion diminished over time.
  2. 35% savings in development time - use of existing infrastructure that includes an array of required capabilities without the need to invest time and development - saving about 6-15 months in development and engineering time.
  3. 25% savings during test maintenance - uniformity in all production lines abroad (in China, Ivory Coast, Nigeria) and management capabilities of products and workstations. The software's reliability has led to significant savings in test maintenance.
  4. Significant easing in the process of transferring the results and reports from the line - the information transfer tools from files to database, the efficient database structure and the uniformity of the data structure between all work stations, made the process of information unification and data analysis much easier and more efficient.

In light of the success, a decision was made to make TVI the automation infrastructure of all the companies' audits. Subsequently, the Nova assessment team continued to convert more and more testers.
