Introduction

Orbotech Ltd develops, manufactures and sells equipment for support, supervision and testing of manufacturing processes of electronic products. Most of its products include AOI systems for optical inspection and control production lines of printed circuit board and flat panel displays along with integrated circuit manufacturing imaging solutions.

The Challenge

The company has a team that develops, manufactures, and maintains testing systems (Test equipment). Until 2015, a self-developed software tool (In-House) based on LabVIEW™ was used. They needed a solution that will:

  • Shorten development time for upgrading and adapting test processes.
  • Allow for easy parameter changing in the tester's sequence.
  • Have a flexible database structure.
  • Ease tester maintenance.

The Solution

TVI software is an infrastructure software for managing automated testers, which includes full support for LabVIEW™.

We started a pilot project of developing one tester based on TVI software. After running on the line, the pilot project was successfully completed, the assessment became operational and a decision was made to make TVI the automation infrastructure of all the testers in the company.

The combination of the software's capabilities gave a complete answer to the customer's requirements:

  • TVI shortened development time by providing a large database of reusable code and allowing easy reusability of their existing code.
  • TVI includes capabilities for changing software and hardware parameters for each test or testing sequence.
  • TVI has dual support for saving data to files and database and the ability to update the database in results files from sites where there is no database, easily and automatically.
  • TVI reduces the cost of developing and maintaining the testers - it includes an array of built-in capabilities, without the need to invest expensive engineering hours in developing a dedicated software infrastructure.

Results

Analysis of the transition process from self-developed software to TVI, revealed the following findings:

  • 40% savings in development time - use of existing infrastructure that includes an array of required capabilities without the need to invest time and development - savings in development and engineering of about 6-15 months, which led to time savings and costly expensive development hours of engineers.
  • 30% savings during testers maintenance - uniformity in all production lines abroad (China, subsidiaries and TK) and management capabilities of products and positions.
  • 25% saving in report generation - the information transfer tool into the database, the efficient database structure and the uniformity of the data structure between all stations, made the information consolidation and data analysis process much easier and more efficient.

In less than two years, a significant portion of Orbotech’s tests were converted to TVI, while continuing the effort to develop new testers using the TVI environment.
